Introducing DianDian点点and DiDi 滴滴, this issue’s new friends! In Chinese, DianDian means “a little/ small dots” and DiDi means “droplets”. Put together as a phrase 点点滴滴 often means all the seemingly insignificant little parts that make up a whole. And hence this issue’s Chinese title is “life’s 点点滴滴.” I drew these characters as early as 2017/18, together with LaoLao (the old man in Issue 2). ⁣

⁣They were first drawn in a cafe tucked away in Novena Medical Centre that James and I liked to visit on days off. We would sit there to read or draw. DianDian and DiDi were doodles when we spoke about Furrie and Shortie having friends. There wasn’t much planning or discussion, or re-drafts even. It was all decided that morning in the cafe who they are, how they would appear etc. I am very lazy so I love these occasions when something seems perfect from the start. Unlike J, intuition’s my best friend. DianDian and DiDi are kids like that too - they come and go with little apparent logic in this issue, yet I hope you will find that it all makes sense in the end. Except for how we choose to act, most of life is not within our control.
